After shutting down 29 bridges for public use, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started giving contracts for re-constructing the bridges marked as ‘dangerous’. However, the cost of constructing these bridges have increased by 22 per cent. 

For rebuilding foot overbridges (FOBs) outside Marine Lines railway station, the civic body has given a contract worth ₹4.35 crore which was ₹3.27 crore earlier. The bridges situated at north and south side of Marine Lines station were declared ‘dangerous’ by the BMC.

After dismantling the bridges, the concerned department in the BMC initiated the tender process. While the expected cost for re-constructing two bridges was ₹3.27 crore, the civic body proposed to increase the estimated cost by 22 per cent. 

With the addition of cost for water and supervision, the estimated cost for constructing both the bridges has increased to ₹5.60 crore and the construction of these bridges is expected to be completed in 18 months.

In its structural audit, BMC discovered that 14 bridges are in dilapidated condition. Later, 15 more bridges were added to the list of dangerous bridges across the city.
