Monsoon Marginally Boosts Mumbai's Reservoir Water Stock; Levels Climb to 8.12%

The city's reservoirs now hold 1,17,532 million litres (ML) of usable water against their total live storage capacity of 14,47,363 ML. This is an increase from 1,03,871 ML (7.18%) recorded a day earlier.

Mumbai's seven reservoirs have registered a slight increase in water levels as monsoon rainfall begins to intensify across the region. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the combined water stock rose from 8.12 per cent on Thursday, July 2.

The city's reservoirs now hold 1,17,532 million litres (ML) of usable water against their total live storage capacity of 14,47,363 ML. This is an increase from 1,03,871 ML (7.18%) recorded a day earlier.

Reservoir-wise storage

  • Modak Sagar: Storage increased from 20% to 22.35.
  • Middle Vaitarna: Reached 12.38% of its total capacity of 1,93,530 ML.
  • Tansa: Rose to 3.60% after being nearly empty a day earlier.
  • Vihar: Crossed the 57.18% storage mark.
  • Tulsi: Storage increased to around 33.96%.
  • Bhatsa: Continues to remain below 5.72%, with usable storage at 717037 ML.
  • Upper Vaitarna: Remains effectively empty as the reservoir level is 594.73 metres, below its Lowest Drawdown Level (LDL) of 595.44 metres, leaving no usable live storage.

Combined storage position

The Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar and Tansa reservoir group currently stands at 8.35 per cent of its useful live storage capacity.

Comparison with previous years

Despite the recent rise, reservoir levels remain below normal for this time of the year.

  • Current storage: 8.12%
  • Same period in 2025: 43.46%
  • Same period in 2024: 7.15%

While current storage is higher than in 2024, it is significantly lower than last year, highlighting the need for sustained monsoon rainfall in the coming weeks.

Rainfall in catchment areas

Most reservoir catchment areas received little rainfall during the past 24 hours, with only isolated light showers reported. However, with monsoon activity expected to strengthen across Mumbai and adjoining regions, reservoir levels are likely to witness a steady rise in the coming days.
