Six months after approving the Caravan Tourism Policy, the state government on Wednesday approved the Adventure Tourism Policy. This much-anticipated policy finally received the nod during the cabinet meeting, presided by the Chief Minister.

Taking into consideration the negative repercussions the tourism industry in Maharashtra has faced due to the pandemic, this policy is expected to give it a much-needed boost.

The policy looks to assist organizations and individuals who are engaged in adventure sports and related activities. From infrastructure, promotions, to training and monitoring, it also looks to offer registration and regulations avenues. At present, certain groups in some locations in Maharashtra offer hiking, trekking, mountaineering, river-rafting, para-gliding, sailing, etc. This policy is also considered to be Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray's pet projects. He in the past has looked to initiate trailblazing measures to get the state on the tourism map.

According to an official, the policy looks to stimulate a plethora of adventure activities which include the likes of hiking, trekking, cycling, amongst others. At the same time, an emphasis on safety and security will also be offered. Thus, deceitful operators will not be allowed to function. This, however, will not be pertinent to competitive expeditions or jungle activities. Its purpose is to ameliorate the state's environment for those who yearn for adventure.

Since Maharashtra is home to dense forests, Western Ghats, a breathtaking coastal range and an immaculate variety of water bodies. These invariably host immense potential to adventure activities in not just air and land tourism, but also water tourism. Moreover, this growing and globally demanded sector hosts an avenue of opportunities.
