A 19-year-old B.Sc. (IT) student at a government hostel in Chembur had allegedly taken her own life on October 17. Now, the police have arrested a 23-year-old man on Sunday, November 10. The man has been identified as Dhananjay Lalit Talwadekar and was her boyfriend.
The girl was enrolled at a Worli college and was living in Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Girls' Government Hostel. The man worked for a private company and lives in Mahatma Jyotiba Cooperative Housing Society in Maharashtra Nagar, Mankhurd. As per a report by Lokmat Times, the man was an acquaintance from their native village.
The girl had previously confided in her younger sister about her relationship with the accused, and this relationship caused the girl distress. She also revealed that their relationship had frequent disagreements. Dhananjay also harassed her physically and emotionally after she eventually stopped returning his calls.
During his numerous visits to her hostel, Dhananjay verbally insulted her and got into arguments with her. According to her sister, the harassment had gotten worse in the last several days. This left her in a lot of emotional pain and led her to consider suicide.
After finding out about his involvement, the father of the girl lodged a formal complaint with the Chembur police. Her family sensed that she had been in tension in recent months. According to the family, the man had been stalking and harassing her for about eight months. The girl's family believes this led her to take such a drastic step. Her hostelmates had also sensed something was wrong when she failed to respond or open her door.
The man has appeared in court and has been remanded to police custody pending additional investigation. He has been charged under sections 352, 115 (2), and 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These sections relate to causing distress, inciting harm, and abetting suicide.
