The Mumbai Police’s extortion cell on Monday, September 26, arrested businessman Riyaz Bhati, who is also the close aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, in connection with an extortion case.
Later, he was asked to be produced before the court today, September 27.
Police officials stated that he was wanted in the extortion case registered at the Versova Police Station.
If reports are to be believed, a businessman from Versova was threatened and a car valued at INR 30 lakhs and cash worth INR 7.5 lakhs were demanded from him.
In addition, Dawood Ibrahim's close aide Chhota Shakeel and Shakeel's relative Salim Fruit have also been named in the FIR, they said.
AEC officials exclaimed that they nabbed Bhati from suburban Andheri and seized two mobile phones from him.
It has also come to light that Bhati and Mohammad Salim Iqbal Qureshi alias Salim Fruit had allegedly threatened to kill a businessman from Versova.
For those unversed, in the past, Bhati had been arrested in multiple cases, including extortion, land grabbing and firing.
He had also tried to flee the country by using fake passports in 2015 and 2020, the official said.
Salim Fruit was earlier arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a case against ’D Company’ syndicate. He is currently in judicial custody, the official added.
