The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), after a recent incident, found that the banquet in Dadar-based Chhabildas School was being operated illegally for over four years. Details regarding the same were found after three labourers were injured post a gas leak incident. Upon identifying the unauthorised operation, the authorities have closed the hall and kitchen.

A report regarding the same was published in the Hindustan Times, which mentioned that a total of nine cylinders have been kept on in the school and that the officials did not seek necessary permission from any department for the activities or related hazards. In the past, the hall has been used for several government events and also by the public for ceremonies.

The report quoted BMC’s medical officer of health, Dr Virendra Mohite, who said, “The banquet hall had no permission from our department. There are fees to be given to the education department, permissions, and a license to be procured to conduct events. None of these were taken. They started the kitchen operations post-Covid and also recently renovated the hall.”

Officials added that even if the school had received the permission, it would only be to serve the food in the premises and not cook, and even if that had to be allowed, it would only be under special circumstances with additional approvals. As of now, a joint drive was planned and the kitchen equipment has been confiscated.

The Chairman of Chhabildas, Shailendra Salvi, has agreed that the hall despite being in BMC’s approved plan, had failed to procure the license. He also mentioned that the funds received from operations were used for the school. He took the onus for not seeking the permission and the blame was not put on the contractor.

As of now, all the existing bookings have been transferred to other venues by the contractor.
