In a tragic turn of events, Dr. Nikhil Tannir, a doctor who went missing during a trek at Peb Fort, has been found dead following an extensive search operation. The doctor disappeared on Sunday, may 14, while descending the fort with his family and friends in the picturesque Matheran range. Concerns grew when he failed to rejoin the group. It led to rescuers initiating a search operation in various areas of the fort. It was assumed that he may have lost his way.

The search operation intensified on Wednesday, May 17, when Umesh More and seven members of the Matheran-based trekker group called Sahyadri Mitra Apatkalin Samajik Sanstha ventured into the valley. They detected a foul smell about 600 feet down the Matheran valley. Further, they discovered Dr. Tannir's lifeless body approximately 1,000 feet down.

Realising the challenging terrain, a backup team was called in to bring the body up using a stretcher and a rope. The body is expected to reach the Matheran railway tracks by Thursday, May 18.

Rahul Meshram, coordinator of the Maharashtra Mountaineers Rescue Coordination Centre, had considered deploying drones during the search operation to aid in locating Dr. Tannir. Additionally, it was revealed that Dr. Tannir's phone had been ringing for two days initially but was later switched off.

While people getting lost in the area is common, fatal falls are rare. It has been reported that Dr. Tannir was leading his group during the descent, and it appears that the family assumed he had taken a different route. It is alleged that Tannir might have met with an unfortunate accident, possibly falling during the descent, which becomes particularly risky during the monsoon season.
