National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023 is out and several prominent Mumbai-based institutions have secured top positions across multiple categories.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, emerged as a front-runner securing fourth rank overall. Bifurcating category-wise, IIT Bombay achieved third rank in engineering, tenth in management, fourth in research, and seventh in innovation. Over the past six years, the institute has consistently secured the third or fourth spot in the overall rankings.

The National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) secured the seventh position in the management category. The Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), renowned for its expertise in chemical technology, has moved up to the sixth position from last year's seven in the pharmaceutical category. The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) secured the tenth position in the research category.

However, not all Mumbai-based institutions experienced positive outcomes in the NIRF 2023 rankings. Mumbai University witnessed a significant decline, dropping to the 96th position in the top 100 educational institutions in the country. This decline is substantial compared to its previous ranking of 81st place.

The Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS), situated in Mumbai has ranked 98th in the university category, just behind Mumbai University. It is an improvement compared to the previous year's ranking of 99th place. TISS dropped from the 37th position in 2021 to the 60th position in 2022.
