Savitribai Phule Pune University, formerly known as University of Pune, has surpassed Mumbai University (MU) on academic quality, research output, and overall excellence. Along with this, the University has emerged Maharashtra's major varsity with largest group of affiliated colleges.

Talking about the same, Pune University vice-chancellor Nitin Karmalkar told TOI that the varsity under every parameter in terms of quality mandates is way ahead than its competitors. He also expressed that the university faces some obstacles due to its size but they has taken some necessary measures to resolve the issues and overcome them. More importantly, Karmalkar stated that they are also encouraging the autonomy.

The Savitribai Phule Pune University, formerly known as University of Pune, was established in 1949. Named after social reformer and educationalist, Savitribai Phule, the university boasts of 43 academic departments. Savitribai Phule Pune University had started with 18 colleges and now it has 890 affiliated to it, apart from 70 research institutes. Compared to PU, Mumbai University, has 823 colleges affiliated to it.

Earlier, the university had jurisdiction over 12 districts of Western Maharashtra but the district spread has now been reduced to three as other universities sprang up in the region. It is known for its excellent facilities along with a campus of about 411 acres and therefore, attracts many foreign students.

Mumbai University, formerly known as the University of Bombay, was established in 1857 and is the oldest university in the state. The educational institution has two campuses across Mumbai and two outside Mumbai. This is one of the earliest state universities in India, and offers bachelors, masters and doctoral courses.
