St Xavier's College, Mumbai's mecca for classroom dreams

In recent developments, St. Xavier’s has been recognized as a heritage structure by the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee.

St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, is a college affiliated with the University of Mumbai offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Arts, Science, Commerce and Management.

According to reports, on 31 May 2010, St. Xavier's was granted autonomy by the University Grants Commission, thereby becoming only the second college in Mumbai to be granted such a status.

Even if a person is not from the city, the visuals of St. Xavier’s is etched on the minds of citizens across the country due to several movies being shot on the college campus like Kabir Singh, Main hoon naa, Paa and Student of the year 2.

Stretched on a 2.94 acres’ campus in the Fort locality of South Mumbai, it is located near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) railway station. Boasting architecture of the Indo-Gothic style, St. Xavier’s has been recognized as a heritage structure by the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee.

Meanwhile, the college is now run by Indian Jesuits, with a distinct focus on affirmative action for minority students. In addition, along with undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Arts, Science, Business, Commerce it offers courses on Public Policy as well. On the other hand, it has spawned several research institutions within its campus including the Blatter Herbarium, and is known for its inter-collegiate youth festival 'Malhar'.

Furthermore, last year, when the outbreak of the coronavirus hit Maharashtra, the civic body of Mumbai, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had put up beds at the St Xavier’s College to treat the patients suffering from COVID-19.
