Mumbai: First-ever Mangrove Park to come up in Gorai

The park will have a boardwalk, kayaking, nature trails, among other attractions and is set to open by January 2023.

On Wednesday, October 20, State Tourism and Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray said that the Maharashtra forest department would set up a mangrove conservation centre and park in Mumbai's Gorai area. The park will have a boardwalk, kayaking, nature trails, among other attractions. Aaditya Thackeray took on Twitter and informed about the same.

It will also have a nature interpretation centre, a mangrove trail, bird observatory. The park is set to open by January 2023, and the cost estimate for the same is INR 26.97 crores. Thackeray has said that the park will boost the state's conservation efforts to transform its eco-tourism industry. They are also planning to replicate the same in Dahisar. 

Taking it to Twitter, Aaditya Thackeray shared the photos and mentioned that Mumbai is the only megacity having 50kms of mangrove coverage. 

Meanwhile, yesterday, October 20, he laid a foundation stone, and the work for the first-ever Mangrove Park has begun.

The Maharashtra State Eco-Tourism Board has approved the project. They have designated it as an eco-tourism project. A release issued by the minister's office states that the project is funded by the DPDC of the Mumbai suburban district. The environment department also grants the project CRZ clearances. The third-party auditor to ensure the proper design and construction of the project will be The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

Recently, it was reported that Mumbai's Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) would soon have a wildlife forensic laboratory to carry out DNA analysis of animals based on swab and scat samples.
