A team consisting of Dr Tirathram Kaushik, Consultant Surgical Oncology and Minimal Access Surgery, Dr Rajashri Bhasale, Consultant Obstetrics, Gynaecologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Dr Atul Narayankar, Consultant Medical Oncology, Dr Ravi Manek, Consultant Interventional Radiology, and Dr Pratik Tibdewal, Consultant Gastroenterology successfully managed a 58-year-old woman residing in Bhayandar detected with dual malignancy (Cancer of Breast and Uterus).

The woman who had symptoms of Post Menopausal Bleeding was promptly treated with Surgery and Radiation therapy.  

Currently, cancer cases are spiking in the country. There are many patients who are battling cancer. But, in this rare case, a patient was detected with two cancers simultaneously. Patient panicked as she suddenly experienced post-menopausal bleeding and came to Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road for further treatment.  

Dr Rajashri Tayshete Bhasale, Consultant Gynecologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road said, “The patient came in Emergency with complaints of post-menopausal bleeding. Her ultrasonography revealed thickening of the endometrium. She further underwent a biopsy that confirmed endometrioid adenocarcinoma (develops in the endometrium, the inner lining of your uterus). Later, the patient was scheduled for a whole-body PET-CT scan and pelvic MRI. The PET-CT scan showed a 5mm lesion in the left breast. So, to rule out the possibility of dual malignancy, bilateral mammography and sono-guided core biopsy of the left breast lesion was done. After the uterine and breast cancer was confirmed, a multi-disciplinary approach was adopted and the patient was counseled and planned for surgery.”

Dr Tirathram Kaushik & Dr Rajashri said, “She underwent a laparoscopic surgery for Uterine Cancer & Oncoplastic Breast Conservation Surgery for Breast Cancer (Breast Preserving Surgery) the patient was discharged in 3 days. She underwent Genetic Testing & was found to have MMR Gene Mutation (Lynch Syndrome).

Dr Tirathram Kaushik consultant Oncosurgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road said, “The patient was suffering from Lynch syndrome which is also known as hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), which is the most common cause of hereditary colorectal (colon) cancer. She also had a greater risk of suffering from colon cancer in the near future. Two surgeries were done in total.  On discharge the patient was feeling much better.  The total duration of the treatment was ongoing for 3 months.  Precautions advised to her: Lifestyle modifications, Exercises, Proper Diet.  

“We have heard of people suffering from one cancer at a time. But, my situation was different. I was battling two cancers simultaneously. I was in a rude shock and couldn’t believe my ears when the doctor confirmed the diagnosis of uterine and breast cancer. The only symptom I had was bleeding even after menopause which was alarming. I am fortunate to have received appropriate treatment at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road.
