The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has made a proposal to construct a new service road below the Eastern Freeway overpass in South Bombay. This project is expected to cost INR 62 crore and will require the removal of 316 trees and the relocation of 66 others to make way for the road.

It has been decided to expand the road because of its narrow width. The width of this road is only 40 metres. This is insufficient according to the Development Plan 2034, which requires a width of 60 metres for any main road.

The current road connects Daya Shankar Marg and Bombay Port Trust and runs underneath the motorway. The proposed road will run parallelly with the current road, directly underneath the overpass, and will be 4km long.

The project management consultant has been hired by the civic authority to map the road alignment. Previously, the mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) was responsible for maintaining the current road. But, after the opening of the flyover, the responsibility was transferred to the BMC.

The civic body has informed the public about the cutting of trees for the project and has invited them to email their comments and concerns to the municipal corporation. This new road will allow for the easy transport of fire transport, ambulances, and other vehicles.
