The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will begin excavating two twin tunnels for the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project in early 2026, civic officials said on Saturday, October 4. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) is being assembled at the construction site and will be launched from a shaft currently under construction.

On the same day, Mumbai’s municipal commissioner and state-appointed administrator, Bhushan Gagrani, visited the GMLR and Mumbai Coastal Road Project (Versova-Bhayander) sites to check the quality of civil works.

The BMC imported the TBM from Japan earlier this year. Two TBMs will be used for the twin tunnels, unlike the Mumbai Coastal Road tunnels, which were excavated with a single machine. Spare parts for the machines are being assembled, and the TBM is expected to be ready by January next year.

Excavation of the first twin tunnel will start soon after. The second TBM is expected to arrive by December, with excavation beginning once assembly is complete. Officials said work continues even during rains, and the shaft is nearly finished. The first boring is expected in the first half of 2026.

The GMLR is a 12.2-kilometre high-speed corridor connecting Mulund in the east with Goregaon in the west. The tunnels, stretching 6.65 kilometres, will run beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park at depths of 20 to 160 metres. The twin tunnels will be 300 metres apart and will include six lanes for vehicles, utility routes, rainwater collection lines, CCTV cameras, and a modern firefighting system.

The total cost of the GMLR project is estimated at INR 14,000 crore, with INR 6,600 crore allocated for tunnel excavation. The first flyover of the project is expected to be operational by May 2026. The eastbound arm of the flyover is scheduled for completion by April 2026, and the westbound arm by January 2026.

Once operational, the GMLR will reduce travel time between Goregaon and Mulund from up to 90 minutes during peak hours to just 25 minutes. The twin tunnels beneath SGNP are expected to be completed by 2028, and the entire GMLR project will be fully operational by 2029.
