Residents of Kalyan are in for a treat as the Smart Kalyan Dombivli Corporation Limited (SKDCL) has announced a revamp of the historic Kala talao in the area. The authorities have submitted a detailed project report (DPR) mentioning the addition of gardens, a restaurant overlooking the lake, a park, an amphitheatre, a vendors’ zone, and so on in the area.

The estimated cost of this project is said to be Rs 51.9 crore which also includes the maintenance costs for five years. However, don’t expect to find Kala talao completely renovated anytime soon, as the project will reportedly take up to two years to complete once started.

The authorities are now in the process of land acquisition, following which they will call tenders to appoint a consultant for the project.

General Manager of SKDCL, Pramod Kulkarni said, “The DPR has been approved by the SKDCL board and the next step is land acquisition from those living around the lake. The civic body will do the acquisition work with a proper rehabilitation plan for the affected people. None of the old areas would be touched while renovating the lake. We will only transform the surrounding areas which have chawls.”

Kala talao is a historic site built by Adil Shah of Bijapur centuries ago and located within a kilometer of Kalyan Railway Station. People of all ages flock here, and the lake is used recreationally. The proposed revamp is also expected to provide a boost to the local economy.
