Mumbai's Iconic Regal Junction To Get ₹45 Crore Facelift

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued an INR 31.20-crore tender to beautify Regal Junction in Colaba. The project will improve pedestrian infrastructure and tourism. It is part of the larger pedestrianisation plan covering Kala Ghoda, the Gateway of India area and Regal Junction. 

The highways department issued the tender on July 22, and interested bidders can submit their proposals until August 17.

The redevelopment will include these changes:

• Granite and basalt cobblestones across the area
• Redesigned and realigned traffic islands and medians
• Heritage-style lamp posts and cantilever traffic signals
• Illumination works and the realignment of Regal Junction
• Relocation of the Vikrant Memorial
• Relocation of existing trees where required, along with the plantation of new trees and shrubs
• Reduction in traffic signals from 27 to nine.

As per reports, a public plaza will be built opposite the director general of police's office near Regal Junction. The plaza will house Mumbai's first outdoor art museum. Traffic moving from Regal Junction towards the Gateway of India will become one-way.

The report also quoted Maharashtra Assembly speaker Rahul Narwekar saying the project has received all the required statutory approvals. An underground parking facility is also being planned at Regal. The changes will improve traffic flow and reduce congestion while ensuring smooth entry and exit from the precinct.
