The Consulate General of Sweden hosted for the first time in India a two day event titled "Swedish Style Mumbai!" A lifestyle showcase on June 4 and 5, 2019 at Famous Studios, Mahalakshmi, Mumbai.

The event presented different sectors of Sweden’s creative industries including fashion, design, architecture, photography, fine arts, film, technology, gastronomy and music in an integrated way.

Swedish Style Mumbai! aimed to foster collaborations between Indian and Swedish creative industries, boost bilateral relations and provide a platform for Swedish designers, architects, entrepreneurs, artists, chefs and companies to synergize with their Indian counterparts, to explore new opportunities and offer new solutions for business and lifestyle concepts.

The curated sessions over two days included ‘Feminine Form’- A Seminar on the influence of feminine perspective on physical products with speakers like Architect Rahel Belatchew, Cecilia Oldne-Visit Stockholm, Charlotte Lund-Curator & Art Dealer, Lotta Marlind-Head of Marketing from Teenage Engineering from Sweden and  Designer Kunal Rawal from India. This was a discussion about successful female designers in fashion, furniture and interior design, art and other creative industries, traditionally dominated by masculine standards moderated by Ms. Ulrika Sundberg, Consul General of Sweden in India. 


The next session titled ‘Future of Fashion’ featured speakers like Jenny Fredricsdotter Circular Business Manager (Re:newcells), Ozgur Aksoy – Sustainability Manager India & Sri Lanka, and Irene Arredondo – Sustainability Specialist Oriflame from Sweden and Designer Anavila Misra, Stylist & Fashion Consultant Ekta Rajani, Dr. Ravinder Tuteja of Birla Cellulose at Aditya Birla Group  & Sander Van Der Stroom – Business Manager India at Daniel Wellington from India which presented ideas for  sustainability, innovation and smart textiles. The discussion moderated by Gautam Vazirani centered on how to tackle the challenges of the fashion and related industries and how to render them more sustainable and tap into innovations to create a circular economy.


Another interesting session titled ‘A Smarter Tomorrow’ was about contemporary, sustainable, climate smart solutions and innovations in design, interior design, architecture and smart homes as it built a case for democratic design. Moderated by Pramiti Madhavji, the speakers for this session included Architect Rahel Belatchew  and Sweco- engineering consultancy company from Sweden and Architect Brinda Somaya and Architect Meenal Sutariya and Kamal Bali President and Managing Director-Volvo Group from India. 

An evening titled ‘Destination Sweden’ was a Presentation on Sweden - a destination for tourism, nature, experiences, gastronomy investments and business, addressed by Ms. Ruth Dolla Manager-India-Visit Sweden as well as Ms. Cecilia, Visit Stockholm and Ms.Tara Naidu, Air India.

In addition to these insightful sessions, Swedish Fashion was at the forefront on the evening of 4th June with a fashion show that featured creations from labels Toteme, Eytys, Hope, Our Legacy, Selam Fessahaye, Max Jenny and By Malina. The elegant evening affair also offered guests a ‘Taste of Sweden’ with speciality dishes created by Swedish Michelin Star Chef Marco Baudone.

In honour of World Environment Day, the closing ceremony on June 5 featured lawyer and synonymous with the world's largest beach clean-up project- Afroz Shah’s talk on safeguarding and taking active steps towards creating a better tomorrow.

Another interesting highlight were the Swedish Start-Ups centred around Sustainability like Ride Cake (Cake is an award-winning start-up electronic motorcycle brand with a pioneering off-road model) Blue Air (leading producers of air purification solutions for home and professional use), Airinum (a start-up brand with fashionable collection of urban air masks and health accessories).

The event was conceptualized in collaboration with Claes and Christina of BrittonBritton, a creative husband and wife team from Sweden. Swedish Style events have in the past been organised and received great success in Milan, New York and Tokyo amongst other fashion capitals, before arriving in Mumbai.
