A driver posted at the Minister of State for Social Justice, Ramdas Athawale's residence tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday. As per the officials, the driver was suffering from fever and throat infection and had been on sick leave since April 5. Later, when he underwent a test on April 18, it was revealed that he has contracted the coronavirus.

A senior police officer stated that following the revelation of the driver testing positive, three police personnel who were part of the convoy and had travelled with him in the vehicle her drove, were asked to go into home quarantine.

However, upon inquiry, the driver said that he does not remember if he had come in contact with anyone who had tested positive.

Since the lockdown was announced, the minister has been living in his Bandra residence. A senior officer told The Indian Express that till April 5, the driver and the police personnel would just go to his residence and sit downstairs as none of the VIPs would be stepping out after the lockdown was imposed. He also added that the driver never went close to the minister.

The driver is a Kharghar resident and prior to the nationwide lockdown, he had sent his family members to his native place. Presently, he has been admitted to a hospital in Panvel.

However, this is not the first instance of a person in the duty of a politician being tested positive. A police constable posted at Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's official residence had also reportedly tested positive.

The constable was posted at 'Varsha', the official residence allotted to all Maharashtra CMs. However, CM Thackeray stays at 'Matoshree', which is the Thackeray family house in Bandra. A constable who was earlier posted on duty at the former CM Devendra Fadnavis' residence had also tested positive.
