In a major development, Facebook chief executive officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday, October 28, announced that the company he founded is rebranding itself as Meta.

Mark Zuckerberg has said his company will henceforth be known as Meta Platforms Inc, or Meta for short, to reflect its commitment to developing the immersive digital world known as the metaverse.

This development comes as Facebook continues to face intense scrutiny. According to reports, dozens of news stories have been released this week based on internal documents provided by whistleblower Frances Haugen painting a company that prioritizes profit over user safety.

The company changes its new logo designed like an infinity-shaped symbol, slightly askew, almost like a pretzel. Facebook, Instagram and other apps will remain, but under the Meta umbrella.

For those unversed, "Facebook", the app, is not changing its name, nor are Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. The company’s chief executive and senior leadership, its corporate structure also won’t change. But on December 1, its stock will start trading under a new ticker symbol, MVRS.

However, soon after the announcement, it attracted lots of criticism claiming the rebranding aims to distract from the company's scandals. Moreover, netizens took to Twitter and fuelled it up with hilarious comments from companies, people and even the social media giant itself.

In addition, several former employees are coming forward in forma of whistleblower and making claims about the social media platform's negligence towards misinformation, security issues, fake news and more.

Meanwhile, Twitter also did not leave any stones unturned to take a swipe over the name change saga. On its official handle, Twitter wrote: “BIG NEWS lol jk still Twitter.”

Here are some highlights of memes and jokes about the new name:
