Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed municipalities in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to develop a plan to introduce pod taxis to provide an efficient public transport system for commuters to travel directly from their homes to their workplaces.

Shinde conducted a detailed review of the implementation of pod taxi services in MMR cities, complementing metro and local travel. He directed municipalities to prioritize providing last-mile connectivity to citizens.

The review meeting, held in Nandanvan, was attended by Aseem Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary to the Deputy Chief Minister, Naveen Sona, Principal Secretary, Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, MMRDA Additional Commissioner Ashwin Mudgal, Thane District Collector Shrikrishna Panchal, and other officials.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that commuters rely on rickshaws or buses to travel from their homes to railway or metro stations and from there to their destinations. Pod taxis should be planned as a solution to road congestion and traffic jams. This will help increase metro usage and reduce the burden of private vehicles on the roads. Instructions were also given to seek assistance from the MMRDA to implement this project.

Municipalities should give top priority to last-mile connectivity in their development plans. The Deputy Chief Minister also said that this service will save passengers time and fuel.
