A long time ago - long before Mumbai was even Bombay, there existed a community that called the swampy islands home. They were the Kolis, the fisherfolk who still occupy pockets of the city and set out before the crack of dawn to earn their daily bread.

This weekend, Bombay Vintage in collaboration with Authenticook is all set to celebrate the original inhabitants of the city, the “Kolis” with a Koli Pop-up. Serving top secret recipes passed on from generations of the family and made with the freshest of fish using home-made masalas, this original Bombay meal will be available at Bombay Vintage from Friday to Sunday, 6th to 8th March 2020.

Meet the chefs!

Chef Subhash Shirke, Corporate Chef - Bombay Vintage is collaborating with home chef Rajini and her family who are residents of the Versova’s Koliwada are cooking up a storm with the chefs at Bombay Vintage. Now a grandmother, Rajini Kathin lives up to the tough character that Koli ladies have come to be known for. Even today, you will see her at the Fish market, resplendent in all her glory with her two daughters who also stay in Koliwada. Not much is known about Koli food that is cooked and served at the homes of these families all over the city.

The Food!

A set meal that serves the koli heritage on a plate - the menu will include authentic Koli appetizers like Karandi Bhaji - baby prawns fried to perfection, Rice Crusted Bombil Fry - Bombay duck marinated in a paste and fried to get a crispy coating and Catch Of The Day Fry - ‘Catch of the Day’  marinated with typical Koli spices and shallow-fried. Mains include - Pankanchi, a broth like pomfret curry which is made using kokum, Tisrya (Clams) Masala, clams made Koli style, Crab Rassa - made using freshly grated coconut and Koli masala and Kolumbi Cha Ambata a tangy fresh prawns gravy cooked Koli style!

Pair your mains with Bhakri, a rice flatbread which is flattened by hand and roasted on an iron tawa, Bhaat - steamed rice that will go well with everything on the plate and Sol Kadi which is the so(u)l of every meal on the coasts of Maharashtra.

Also on the menu is Bharleli Keli - a mixture of coconut and jaggery stuffed in bananas then fried in ghee - a sweet authentic end to the meal.
