BMC to cancel licences of six hawkers using plastic bags

After the plastic ban was initiated by the Maharashtra government, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) claimed to have seized more than 48,841 kg of plastic. While the ban has been active throughout the state, the civic body found six hawkers using plastic bags.

Accordingly, on February 1, the municipal corporation decided to cancel the licence of the hawkers using plastic bags after the ban. On Friday, BMC found almost 28 kg of plastic bags from the accused hawkers.

BMC had appointed a special team, 'The Blue Squad' to conduct the investigation against the hawkers using the plastic bags. As per the regulations, the defaulters will be fined between ₹5,000 and ₹25,000, or three months in jail. At the same time, their license can also be canceled.

Maharashtra government had announced that there would be a complete plastic ban in the state w.e.f. Gudi Padva, i.e. March 18, 2018.
