In order to solve the problem of excessive plastic in the city, the state had declared a ban on the use of plastic. After seven months of the plastic ban, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has claimed that they have seized around 48,841 kg of plastic and have collected a fine of ₹2.21 crore. 

The seized plastic has been collected by the different wards across the city and now the BMC has decided to issue a tender for the disposal of the plastic.

As per BMC records, the civic body has taken action against 377 individuals for using plastic after the ban and refusing to pay the fine for it. Inspection teams have inspected 5.19 lakh markets, shops, and establishments across Mumbai from June 23, 2018.

Currently, the BMC team collects on average a total of 100 kilos of plastic with the help of its 24 special teams in Mumbai. Further, the municipal corporation plans to raise awareness amongst the shopkeepers and vendors on the streets of Mumbai.
