Shiv Sena won the election for the chairperson post of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) standing committee and BMC education committee. This happened after Congress withdrew its candidates which contributed to the defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The elections for the BMC standing committee and education committee were held on Monday. All major political parties including Shiv Sena, BJP and Congress had fielded their candidates for the chairperson post in both committees. In standing committee, Shiv Sena had 11 members followed by 10 in BJP, three in Congress, one each in Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Samajwadi Party (SP).

During the voting for chairperson post in the BMC education committee, Congress withdrew its candidate to not disappoint its ally in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the state. Moreover, Congress took a neutral stance during the election.

This led to Sandhya Doshi of Shiv Sena being elected as the chairperson of BMC education committee. She was contesting against BJP’s Surekha Patil. As this happened, Shiv Sena’s strength in the standing committee has been increased by one.

Shiv Sena’s Yashwant Jadhav was re-elected as the standing committee chairperson. He managed to defeat Markrand Narvekar from the BJP easily after Congress withdrew its candidate.
