Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal recently informed that they have not received any proposal by the Maharashtra government to restart local train services in Mumbai for the general passengers.

On Saturday, during a press conference, Goyal had informed that the Ministry of Railway hasn’t received any kind of request from the state government to start local trains for all.

Several political parties and opposition have been demanding the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government to allow general passengers to travel in the local trains. The local train services are running for those working in essential sectors and government offices.

Earlier, the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) protested against the Uddhav Thackeray government asking it to restart the local train for Mumbaikars. Sandeep Deshpande along with three MNS leaders travelled in the local train to defy the lockdown rules.

The Central and Western Railway is working towards increasing the number of local trains to manage the overcrowding. The CR planned to increase the number of daily special suburban services from 355 to 423. This was made effective from September 24 and the concerned division has now decided to run additional 68 local trains - 46 services on the Central line and 22 services on harbour line.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray informed that the resumption of local train services for all was likely in mid-October. He said that the state government was thinking of starting local train services for all from October 15.

Thackeray, however, said that the decision will be taken after ensuring that all safety protocols are followed amid the coronavirus pandemic.
