Citizens should continue following COVID guidelines despite having antibodies: Experts

Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases are on a rise again in Maharashtra and considering the risks regarding the predicted third wave, the government has imposed restrictions to curb the spread of COVID infection. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had also imposed guidelines to ensure the festivities are spent in a simple manner as directed by the government. However, considering the third wave, the municipal corporation had recent conducted a fifth sero survey to check the level of antibodies present in the citizens across ages. 

The report for the survey was released on Friday, September 17, 2021, which stated that approximately 86 per cent Mumbaikars have antibodies to fight the virus. Officials mentioned that the antibodies were found in 90.26 per cent of those who were fully or partially vaccinated. Meanwhile, antibodies were found in 79.86 per cent of the unvaccinated population. Antibodies were found in 51 per cent of samples collected from children.

In comparison to previous surveys, the incidence of antibodies has increased in slums as well as in non-slum areas. The civic body said that even if antibodies are found, care must be taken with the use of masks, hand hygiene and safe distance. 

Blood samples were tested or the survey to constantly check the antibodies among the citizens. A total of 8600 samples were collected 24 wards. and studied to find out the rate of antibodies in both men and women. Officials said that not much difference was noted in samples collected from slums and buildings. meanwhile, the health department has emphasised that considering the rise in cases, following the COVID guidelines is mandatory.
