Mumbai: Day 1 Of Crackdown Against Helmetless Pillion Motorist; Riders Unhappy With Move

On day 1 of their crackdown against pillion riders without helmets, Mumbai Police fined a total of more than 6,000 motorists yesterday, June 9.

According to data revealed by the Mumbai traffic police, 3,431 helmetless pillion motorists were fined on the first day of the drive till 7 pm. Officials stated that the action will continue in the days to come.

Of the total, 2,334 riders were challaned for not wearing a helmet. In addition, 516 challans were issued as both riders and pillion riders were not wearing helmets. With this, the total number of motorists challaned by the city police was 6,271.

It has also come to light that the South region accounted for most of the challans at 2,100. This includes areas of Fort, Colaba, Malabar Hill, Nariman Point, Marine Lines, Kalbadevi, Pydhonie, Mahalaxmi, and Tardeo.

While the traffic department had given 15 days’ time to bikers for compliance, failing which they would be penalised, it is pertinent to note that riders were unhappy with the move and said helmets for pillion riders are unnecessary.

On May 25, the police commissioner had instructed traffic cops to take action against bikers whose pillion riders were not wearing helmets under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act (MVA).
