In the latest order issued by the Mumbai Traffic Police, people riding a 2-wheeler which includes the rider as well as the pillion have been urged to wear a helmet. According to the order, action will be undertaken if this rule is violated for the pillion rider too.

The Mumbai traffic police remarked that they will be implementing this after 15 days from now which falls on June 9. The circular elaborated on how it will soon be compulsory for pillion riders to wear helmets.

The order further elucidates that flouting the rule will attract a fine of INR 500 along with the suspension of the driving license for a period of three months. In addition to this, helmets will also be made mandatory for cyclists.

Earlier in April, the Mumbai Police had issued a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for two-wheeler motorists to crack down on helmetless drivers. These included issuing an e-challan, and sending details to the RTO to suspend the driver's license for three months.

In addition to this, the offender will be sent to the nearest traffic chowky for a two-hour traffic awareness campaign and ensure that such an action is not repeated. The police will soon be imparting training to the students. Moreover, now No FIRs will be registered.
