The city traffic police have started a drive in a desperate bid to decrease the incidents of helmetless riding, which causes fatal accidents on the roads of Mumbai.

Accordingly, the Mumbai Police on Thursday, April 7, issued new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for two-wheeler motorists in order to crack down on helmetless drivers.

  • First, an e-challan will be issued to the biker for flouting the helmet rule.
  • Then the details will be sent to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to suspend their driver's license for a span of three months.
  • Later, the offender will be sent to the nearest traffic chowky for a two-hour traffic awareness campaign and ensure that such an action is not repeated.
  • The police will soon be imparting training to the students through videos, lectures and campaigns across the city after realizing that most accidents involve younger generations from colleges and schools.
  • As per reports, the plan is underway and DCP Roushan has requested the school/college authorities to support the traffic police in this initiative to sensitise the students and ensure they are traffic rule aware.
  • Moreover, now No FIRs will be registered.

In a YouTube video shared on Mumbai Police’s page, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic HQ) Raj Tilak Roushan said that in a bid to root out such offenders, the necessary SOP has been put in place to ensure that the violator learns his lesson.

In the last one month, we have fined over 75,000 bikers for driving without helmets, he added.

Mumbai commissioner Sanjay Pandey had announced in his Facebook Live session that riding without helmets is dangerous and that he had given instructions to register FIRs for rash driving against the offenders. Post discussions, it was decided to not register FIRs but have an SOP in place.
