Amidst the outbreak of the coronavirus in Mumbai, Mahim may miss out on the annual 10-day carnival due to the contagious nature of the disease.

The carnival that was supposed to take place from December 28 to January 7, might not be held this year. In a first, in its 121-year history, the carnival would not be held. The mela is usually held in honour of Sufi saint Pir Makhdoom Ali Mahimi and draws a massive number of visitors from across the city and outside.

As per reports, the mela began in 1901 to fete Mahimi, also called the secular saint of Mahim. Moreover, the first sandal (tribute comprising flowers, shawl, sandal paste) to the shrine comes from the Mumbai police. The traditional sandals, sans DJs and huge processions this year, will come, however, there is no clarity yet if the mela at the nearby Reti Bandar will be held.

On the other hand, in view of the pandemic, the Maharashtra government has prepared its vaccination programme for the coronavirus. According to sources, it plans to administer the vaccine to 3.25 crore people in six months which will be completed in three phases. Those who will get vaccine shots include health workers, frontline workers and citizens above the age of 50 years and having co-morbidities.

Moreover, according to the officials, the phases are to be conducted systematically. People will have to register at a designated website and they will be asked to appear before a vaccination camp on a specific date and time to ensure it to be a smooth affair.
