Parts of Southern India witnessed the solar eclipse this morning. The hype for the eclipse was pretty high on social media, as it was also visible in neighbouring regions like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and other countries.
Well, it seems like Prime Minister Narendra Modi has managed to eclipse the actual event with his Twitter post. He posted a tweet discussing the eclipse, which also contained a picture of him wearing sunglasses. While innocuous at first, closer inspection by Twitter’s hawk-eyed observers revealed that the sunglasses Modi was wearing at the time was worth around Rs 1.5 lakh, made by German brand Maybach.
Needless to say, Twitter erupted with hundreds of memes, including some from Modi’s critics as well. Given the polarized nature of our country’s politics, it’s safe to say there was a balanced ratio of positive as well as negative comments on the matter. While some criticized the PM calling him “#BrandedFakeer”, some others decided to photoshop other characters into the picture to entertain their audiences.
What won the internet, however, is when PM Modi acknowledged a tweet from @GappistanRadio claiming that this has become a meme. PM quoted the tweet saying “Most welcome....enjoy :)” This laidback response from the PM also started trending #CoolestPM on Twitter.
