This year's Operalia will take place at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai in September. Operalia is a globally renowned opera singing competition, started by Spanish singer Placido Domingo in 1993. It has previously taken place on prestigious stages worldwide, including Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, Milan's Teatro alla Scala, and London's Royal Opera House.

This year, Operalia marks its 31st season with its first-ever event in India, following successful runs in Tokyo, Beijing, and Astana. This will be the fourth time the contest is happening in Asia.

NCPA chairman Khushroo N Suntook expressed his excitement at a recent press conference, stating that Operalia 2024 would be a significant event for the Indian music community. He believes that the event will inspire young Indian musicians to explore Western classical music and opera.

Operalia is considered one of the most prestigious opera singer competitions globally, second only to the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World. It offers competitors exposure to top opera venues worldwide.

Operalia has been a launchpad for several successful artists, including Grammy-winning mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, South African soprano Pretty Yende, Bass Stephano Park and Soprano Julie Roset. This year's jury includes representatives from the Salzburg Festival, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Metropolitan Opera House, and the Royal Opera House.

Operalia invites all operatic voice types and singers aged between 20 and 32 from around the world to compete in this week-long event. The contest receives many entries each year, with the top 30–40 vocalists selected to audition before a panel of global opera stars. This year, the Symphony Orchestra of India will accompany the finalists at the NCPA under Placido Domingo's direction.
