E-commerce giant, Flipkart has managed to attain the commendable feet of excluding all single-use plastic packaging at its fulfilment centres across the nation. It had earlier committed to plastic-free packaging in its supply chain by 2021.
At over 70 facilities in India, Flipkart has managed to do so with the aid of sustainable alternatives. These include eco-friendly paper shreds, recycled paper bags, carton waste shredded material and 2 ply rolls. Even while addressing its environmental responsibilities, the company has ensured to comply with the extended producer responsibility regulations. Even more so, with the assistance of its network of recyclers, the amount of single-use plastic reaching consumers is fully recycled.
Hemant Badri, Senior Vice President and head of the supply chain has lauded the initiative undertaken during the arduous time of the pandemic. The company, however, isn’t stopping there, they are now educating their seller partners who directly cater to the consumer’s needs about alternative materials. It also plans to undertake further initiatives to create a circular economy for plastics, thus, working towards a sustainable future. It aims to take inspiration from their already achieved 27% reduction in single-plastic use packaging in producer discharge.
Apart from this, other initiatives that they have worked towards include “E-commerce ready packaging” where they shipped approximately 15% of products without the second layer of packaging. The company is resolute towards its dream of holistic and sustainable growth for a low carbon economy. Flipkart has now committed to a 100% shift to electric vehicles by 2030 in its city logistics network.
