Vice President to issue ₹125 coin on June 29

The day, June 29 is celebrated as Statistics Day in remembrance of Indian scientist and applied statistician, PC Mahalanobis. On the occasion of his 125th birth anniversary, the Vice President announced the issue of the ₹125 coin along with new ₹5 coins.

The ten-rupee coin is the highest currency available in the coin form in the country at present. However, Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu will be issuing a coin of ₹125 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of PC Mahalanobis on June 29, along with a new coin of ₹5.

Mahalanobis Jayanti is celebrated as Statistics Day. In regard to the Statistics Day, the Ministry said in a statement that the subject of Statistics Day this year is 'quality confidence in official statistics'. After the introduction of change in various notes, the government is now preparing to bring new coins in the market. This will be the first time that a coin of ₹125 will be issued in the Indian market.

The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation and the Indian Statistical Institute have organised the event in Kolkata on June 29 to celebrate Statistics Day. Given the remarkable contributions made by Mahalanobis, the government had announced in 2007 that June 29 will be celebrated as Statistics Day.
