In the name of Smart City, cement roads are being torn up again and a large number of trees are being cut down in Thane. By dividing the market, the traffic situation is being invited and people are being trapped. BJP-NCP members on Tuesday tried to embarrass the Chief Minister over beautification in Thane, alleging that the municipality's tree authority was working only for developers.

Uday Samant, the Minister in-charge of the Urban Development Department, assured that the government will ensure that the people of Thane will not suffer due to traffic jams. Sanjay Kelkar, Jitendra Awhad and other members, during the discussion on Lakshvedhi, alleged that the affairs of the Thane Municipal Corporation are currently being run on the orders of Sumit Baba regarding the large-scale felling of trees in Thane under the Smart City project. Awhad alleged that Thanekars are being harassed in the name of development. Awhad also asked who supports this Sumit Baba and why the Municipal Commissioner listens to this Baba.

The Thane Smart City project is being implemented at a cost of around INR one thousand crore and all the works in the Smart City project have been done well. Samant said that since 2015, 10,315 trees have been cut down for development works and 25,734 trees have been replanted and 80 percent of them have survived. Pratap Sarnaik said that due to Chief Minister Shinde, a large amount of funds are being received for development in Thane and the works are being done in a good manner.

Environmental damage

The tree authority in Thane is working in an arbitrary manner and more trees are being felled than allowed. BJP's Sanjay Kelkar alleged that this authority is not working for the city but in the interest of development. He also demanded that the decisions taken by the Tree Authority in the last three years since the corona period should be investigated through a trilateral system. Sunil Prabhu alleged that due to the mismanagement of the municipality, trees in the city are being destroyed on a large scale and the environment is being damaged.

'Give enhanced powers to curb drug menace'

The Centre has been asked to give the powers of the Anti-Drug Act (NDPS) to the states to curb the growing menace of narcotics in the states. According to this, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday that the central government is ready to hand over the powers of the Narcotics Control Board (NCBC) to the anti-terrorist squad of the state and that the law of the state will also be made more stringent.
