The Pune district administration on Friday, April 2, announced a 12-hour curfew in the city starting tomorrow, April 3, amid an alarming spike in the coronavirus cases. This decision comes after a COVID-19 review meeting chaired by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

Night curfew timings in the Pune district have been revised to 6 pm to 6 am from the earlier 8 pm to 7 am.

According to the orders issued by Pune Divisional Commissioner, bars, hotels, restaurants will remain closed for seven days. Only home delivery of foods, medicines and other essential services will be allowed. Religious places will be completely closed for the next seven days.

The order also states that no public function, except funerals and weddings, will be allowed. A maximum of 20 people at funerals and 50 at weddings will be permitted to attend.

The situation will be reviewed next Friday. Pune is among the worst-affected areas in India as a result of a renewed wave of infections.

Pune district in Maharashtra reported 8,011 new coronavirus cases and 65 deaths on Thursday while the state reported over 43,000 cases. This is the second consecutive day, the district has recorded more than 8,000 cases.

Moreover, Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol has directed private hospitals to make 80 per cent of beds available for COVID-19 patients.

Talking to reporters, he said, "Presently, there is no serious need of imposing lockdown. Instead testing, tracing and vaccination drives have to be increased, which we are doing already." The Mayor, however, warned that if the spike could not be controlled soon, stricter measures, including a lockdown, may follow.
