Mumbai Guardian Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha has directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials to go ahead with the tender to construct 14,000 conventional community toilets worth INR 488 crores.

This development came a month after the minister asked civic officials to put the project, building slum pockets, and instead install pre-cast loos, on hold.

In July Lodha demanded withholding of the tender to meet some conditions, but he changed his stance in August, demanding not to hold the full tender and use pre-cast toilets only wherever possible. Also, separate tenders for the construction of new or additional public toilets through corporate companies should be floated and finalised so that the work starts at the same time.

Lodha had written to civic administrator Iqbal Singh Chahal on July 5, following which the BMC decided to withhold the tender to construct 1,200 community toilets having 14,000 toilet seats in total and at least 500 should be pre-fabricated as traditional toilet blocks cost more.

Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister Lodha, BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, Additional Commissioner (Projects) P. Velarasu along with Additional Commissioner (Western Suburbs) Sudhakar Shinde held a meeting regarding various civic issues in Mumbai. In this meeting, road, sewer, waste management, footpath, parking space issues in different parts of Mumbai were discussed.

The project also includes cleaning of toilets five times a day, keeping security guards, entertainment improvements in all parks. Renovation and full utilisation of municipal schools, 60 days pension of municipal employees after retirement, improvement of parks, improvement of public entertainment places, improvement of municipal hospital, complaints about our dispensary, public parking and other parking issues and Along with suggestion, renewal of municipality in schools, there was a positive discussion on skill development, study and nursery.
