Sixteen people from the Sundarbag area of Kurla West reportedly fell ill after consuming momos, with symptoms consistent with suspected food poisoning. Fourteen patients were admitted to Bhabha Hospital in Kurla, while two others received treatment through the outpatient department (OPD).
The incident was reported on the night of August 23, while the affected individuals began experiencing symptoms on August 24, according to Dr Manoj Varma, Medical Superintendent of Bhabha Hospital.
The patients reportedly developed vomiting and loose motions after eating momos. Some also experienced fever, abdominal pain and dizziness.
The affected group included children as well as teenagers and adults. Five of the patients were children between three and 13 years old. The two people treated in the OPD were aged 13 and 14.
Dr Varma said that the patients were assessed and treated according to their symptoms. Seven patients remain admitted at the hospital and are currently in stable condition, while the others were discharged after receiving treatment. Doctors have advised routine or follow-up investigations wherever required.
Following the incident, Mumbai Municipal Corporation Health Committee Chairman Harish Bhandirge visited Bhabha Hospital and met the affected patients. He also spoke with doctors and hospital officials to review their condition and the treatment being provided.
Bhandirge sought details about the incident and directed officials to conduct an investigation and take appropriate action.
The exact cause of the illness has not yet been established. Authorities are expected to investigate the food consumed by the patients and determine whether contamination or poor food-handling practices were responsible.
The incident has once again raised concerns over food hygiene and safety, particularly when consuming food from roadside stalls. While the patients are currently reported to be stable, the investigation will determine the source of the suspected contamination and whether further action is required.
