Following the Bombay High Court banning the immersion of Ganesh idols in natural ponds in Aarey, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has installed 2 artificial ponds and 6 mobile artificial ponds in Aarey for Anant Chaturdashi. According to the Free Press Journal report, the BMC has installed 2 artificial ponds near the natural pond in Aarey, 4 mobile artificial ponds and 2 lakes along the Western Express Highway. Aarey Picnic Spot devotees can immerse idols up to four feet tall in these artificial ponds.
Meanwhile, considering the population of the nearby Aarey area, former BMC group leader Prabhakar Shinde has demanded more artificial ponds. Shinde said that devotees from Goregaon East, Goregaon West, Andheri East and Malad East come to Aarey for idol immersion. If there are not enough artificial lakes then they will have to face inconvenience.
Last year, 3431 Ganesh idols were immersed in three natural ponds and seven artificial ponds in Aarey.
