Two people were electrocuted and five others were injured during a procession on Thursday evening, April 13, ahead of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti in Virar (East).

The incident occurred when a flag on a metal rod mounted on a tram came into contact with a transformer. The procession, which was carried out by Baudh Panchayat Samiti, commenced at 9 pm from Kargil Nagar in Virar east and ended at 10:30 pm.

According to eyewitnesses, a pothole on the road caused the trolley to slant towards the left, and the metallic rod contacted the transformer on the left side. Those who were standing on the trolley were unaffected, but those who were pushing and pulling it suffered severe burns or electric shocks. Rupesh Sharad Surve, 20, and Sumeet Shivaji Sood, 28, were killed instantly.

Three other people were critically injured and were sent to Kasturba Hospital in Byculla, while the other two patients with minor injuries were being treated at Radiant Hospital and the civic-run hospital in Nagindaspada in Nalasopara (East). The police had already arrived at the hospital to control the crowd.

Ramchandra Deshmukh, the divisional assistant commissioner of police (ACP), stated that the surface of the trolley was made of wood. The police are conducting additional inquiries into the incident and are in the process of registering an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in relation to the incident.
