The Maharashtra government had promised to raise the wages of Anganwadi workers and helpers in December 2023. However, there has been no action on this, which has led to growing unrest. The workers have planned to start a protest on Wednesday, August 21.

Anganwadi workers were enlisted to help enrol women in the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana because of their connections to the community. Each worker was responsible for signing up at least 100 beneficiaries. Anganwadi workers and helpers had enrolled 16.4 million women by last Monday. As per reports, workers and helpers both worked until midnight to help women register on the portal. This has caused frustration among the 110,000 Anganwadi workers and 95,000 helpers who worked hard to meet their targets.

Currently, Anganwadi workers earn INR 10,500 per month, while helpers receive INR 5,500. The pay increase was supposed to align with that of ASHA employees. ASHA workers, who work under the public health department, received an INR 5,000 raise in early 2024, increasing their pay to INR 13,000 per month.

They are demanding the pay raise they were promised. Implementing the pay raise would cost the state an estimated INR 1,200 crore annually. This is a small portion compared to the cost of the Ladki Bahin Yojana. The state government expects to spend INR 45,000 crore annually on the scheme. This will benefit 24.5 million women. In the scheme, women with an annual family income below INR 2.5 lakh will receive a monthly allowance of INR 1,500.
