A building collapsed on another in a slum in the Malvani area of Malad West, Mumbai, at 11.10 pm on Wednesday night, June 9.

The incident, which occurred at the New Collector compound slum on Abdul Hamid road in Malvani gate no 8, took away the lives of 11 people. Out of these 11, eight were children. As per preliminary report, it was a G+2 building that fell on another building. 

At least seven others, who were seriously injured, have been admitted at BDBA Municipal General Hospital.

The incident took place after the city witnessed heavy rainfall throughout the day, said minister Aslam Shaikh. Many are still feared trapped under the debris. Search and rescue operations are underway, said an official.

The local police and fire brigade reached the spot immediately after the incident was reported.

Three other buildings nearby are in 'dangerous' condition and the residents have been evacuated, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said.

Meanwhile, the opposition blamed the ruling government for its negligence. Taking it to Twitter, BJP spokesperson Ram Kadam termed the death of the people in the incident murder due to negligence. He said it was a planned assassination by way of allowing the construction of the building with unauthorised height. Moreover, the MLA further asked the Shiv Sena and the BMC to take responsibility for the "murder".

Besides, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'yellow alert' for various districts, including Mumbai, for the next four days.

For those unaware, a few days ago, the wall of a four-storey building collapsed on an adjoining two-storey house in suburban Bandra. The incident took place on June 7 at Razzak Chawl in Behrampada, Bandra East, which killed one person and left five others injured.
