A 43-year-old man, Suraj Shetty, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a sessions court. He was found guilty of killing his wife, Babita, in October 2017.

The conviction came despite his son's opposition as an eyewitness.

As per reports, Babita and Shetty had eloped in 2005. Since then, the couple lived together with their two children.

On October 14, 2017, Babita visited her mother, Kavita Panchal's house. She returned at around 10:30 pm. Soon after, her son ran to inform that his mother had been killed. In response, Panchal and a neighbour rushed to Babita’s home.

The house's lights were on, but the door was locked. Looking through a window, they saw Babita lying on the floor. Blood was visible on her head. They called the police and an ambulance. Babita was declared dead at the hospital.

Panchal reported the incident to the Govandi police station. Police arrested Shetty the next day, October 15, 2017. He claimed he was in Vashi at work when his son called. He claimed that his son told him that Babita had fallen. The son initially testified against the father but later got in favour of him during the trial.

However, the court focused on other evidence. The court noted multiple physical injuries on Babita's body. These injuries indicated physical violence. The court ruled that her death was a murder, not an accident. It also stated that Shetty had failed to explain the circumstances of Babita’s death.

The judge determined that Shetty was present at the scene. He was unable to provide evidence to support his alibi. This lack of an explanation led the court to a guilty verdict. Shetty has been in custody since his arrest.
