
Two schoolboys aged 13 and 15 drowned after entering a water tank to swim at a cattle shed in Gautam Nagar, Aarey Colony, in Goregaon East on Friday, August 21. The incident was reported shortly before noon, leaving the local community shocked.
The deceased were identified as Zaib Patel, 15, and Nakhib Patel, 13. Zaib was a Class 10 student, while Nakhib was studying in Class 9. Both boys were students of Jogeshwari Gunfa English Medium Secondary School.
According to civic officials, the incident occurred at around 11.55 am near Gautam Nagar and Modern Bakery Junction in Aarey Colony. The boys had reportedly entered a water tank located at a cattle shed to swim when they drowned.
Following the emergency call, personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, 108 ambulance services and BMC ward staff reached the spot. Fire brigade personnel rescued the boys from the tank and shifted them to Trauma Care Hospital.
However, doctors later declared both boys brought dead. The concerned medical officer informed the authorities about their deaths at around 1.48 pm.
The principal of Jogeshwari Gunfa English Medium Secondary School confirmed that Zaib and Nakhib were enrolled at the institution. School authorities said both students were absent from classes on Friday.
The circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the boys accessed the water tank and whether adequate safety measures were in place, remain unclear. Authorities are investigating the sequence of events leading to the drowning.
The incident has also raised concerns about the safety of open or accessible water tanks in areas where children may be able to enter them.
