A 45-year-old contractual female cleaner died in a tragic accident on Juhu beach in Mumbai on Friday morning, June 12. The accident occurred when she was crushed under a Bobcat machine used for beach cleaning.
According to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation's Disaster Management Cell, the accident occurred around 10.30 am while routine cleaning work was going on at Juhu beach.
The deceased woman has been identified as Angamma Devendra and she was working as a cleaner for a private organization.
Claimed to have sat in the bucket of the Bobcat despite being warned
According to the information given by the officials of the municipal corporation's solid waste management department, the woman concerned was sitting in the bucket of the Bobcat machine. It has been claimed that the machine operator had warned her not to do so.
However, while the cleaning work was going on, the machine went through a hole and she lost her balance and fell out of the bucket. She was then seriously injured when the Bobcat machine ran over her.
Doctors declared her dead at the hospital
She was immediately admitted to Cooper Hospital after the accident. However, the doctors declared her dead after examination.
Further investigation into the matter is underway and the exact causes of the accident and whether safety rules were followed are being investigated.
Question raised on safety measures
After this incident, question marks have been raised on the safety measures of workers in the cleaning campaigns implemented by the municipal corporation and the contracting organizations. The need for strict adherence to safety rules while using machinery on the beach has been highlighted again.
