NMMC releases a list of 475 dangerous buildings in the district

Officials from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation have appealed to the citizens to stop living in these dangerous buildings and evacuate the premises immediately as it could risk their lives.

In a recently reported incident, a building collapsed in Mumbai's Malad area where 11 people passed away. Every year, a few buildings collapse in Mumbai and nearby areas, during the monsoon and understanding the same, the civic bodies release a list of high-risk buildings, and as per reports, the number of dangerous buildings, in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, has been increasing. 

Data released about Navi Mumbai shows that this year, officials added another 32  buildings to the existing list and as a result, Navi Mumbai now has 475 dangerous buildings. These structures in the jurisdiction of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) have been surveyed thoroughly and the concerned officials have declared them to be dangerous.

These include 65 buildings that are categorised as C-1, i.e. of high-risk and uninhabitable whereby immediate eviction is needed. Besides this, 94 buildings are categorised under C-2A whereby evacuation is needed to perform structural repairs and 259 under C-2B where structural repairs will be performed without vacating the building. Moreover, 57 buildings are under the C-3 category and require minor repair work.

Officials have informed that it is dangerous to stay in some buildings and the situation has worsened due to the monsoon. If not evacuated, this could lead to loss of life and property. Understanding the same, the NMMC has appealed to the citizens to stop living in these dangerous buildings and evacuate immediately. If the directives are not followed, the persons living in the premises will be held be responsible for the damage caused to the building as well as the collapse; and NMMC will not be responsible for the same.
