Now, electric autorickshaws will be procured by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to collect solid waste from narrow lanes and community bins in the M East ward. This ward comprises areas such as Govandi, Deonar and Mankhurd.

M East ward office has called a tender for procuring six e-rickshaws. According to a BMC official, each e-rickshaw will cost around INR 5 lakh.

The trash will be collected around the clock and transferred into compactors. There are about 1,500 such bins across the city.

Explaining further, civic official stated that after a basic study, a schedule will be prepared to determine from which section and how often an e-rickshaw will ply in an area. Also, they will appoint a contractor for the maintenance of the rickshaw and driver. If needed, the BMC will plan on increasing the number of e-rickshaws in the future.

Currently, the civic body uses mini-tempos for waste collection on small roads in slums. But they can’t be driven through narrow lanes. Also, there is the issue of traffic congestion. Electric rickshaws can move easily through narrow lanes and slum areas of M east ward areas.

The e-rickshaws will reduce the problem of solid waste accumulating around community bins. Therefore, the activists have hailed this concept.

Moreover, the BMC uses small closed vehicles, mini compactors, large compactors and bulk compactors to combat waste.
