Deaths reported due to open manhole in Mumbai continue despite the monsoon being over. Over the last few years, many Mumbaikars have fallen into the open manholes around the city and died due to the tragic conditions. Another such incident was reported recently in Virar where a 62-year-old woman accidentally fell into an open manhole.

Identified as Kamlaben Shah, the homemaker from Virar died on Monday, November 7, 2022, reportedly by falling into the manhole. The police received the information that she left for the temple at 5:30 in the morning, as a part of the daily routine, but did not return home. Concerned due to the same, the husband, Gulabchand Shah, filed a report at 10 AM, and after investigation, her body was found in the manhole, in the evening.

A report regarding the same was published in the Hindustan Times which added that the family was not able to locate her at the temple. They informed the neighbours regarding the same and after a thorough search conducted by the family and locals for over two hours, they sought the help from the police.

A missing person’s report was filed by the police after Gulabchand informed the officials. Quoting the husband of the deceased, the report said, “When I came home, a teenager staying near my building in Virar west came to my house and informed me that he could see a hand coming out of the murky water of an open manhole.”

A fire brigade was informed immediately who reached the spot and removed Kamlaben from the manhole. She was taken to the Sanjeevani Hospital, however, was declared dead on arrival. Sharing more details from the filed report, the police informed, “We are in the process of registering an accidental death report (ADR) and investigating the matter to find out whether Kamla Shah died due to negligence.”

Kamlaben and Gulabchand have been residents of Virar for over 20 years.
