Nearly 90% of advertising hoardings across Thane city allegedly violate Maharashtra government regulations governing their size and height, prompting the Congress to demand immediate action from the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).
Under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation (Display of Sky-Signs and Advertisement) Regulation and Control Rules, 2022, advertising hoardings are permitted up to a maximum size of 40 by 30 feet, while their height cannot exceed 40 feet from the level of the road.
However, several hoardings in Thane allegedly exceed these limits, with some reportedly being two to three times larger than the prescribed dimensions.
The issue came to light after NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) corporator Marzia Pathan sought information from the civic administration regarding the rules governing advertising hoardings. TMC Deputy Commissioner of the Advertisement Department Jitendra Nikam reportedly provided details of the applicable regulations.
Citing the civic administration’s response, former Congress city president Vikrant Chavan alleged that around 90% of the city’s hoardings are unauthorised and violate multiple norms, including those related to height, dimensions, location, open spaces, reserved plots under the development plan and road requirements.
Chavan pointed to a particularly large hoarding on Pokhran Road measuring around 150 by 15 feet, alleging that such structures are clearly in violation of the prescribed norms.
He has demanded that the civic body take action against the unauthorised hoardings and bring them within permissible limits within a month.
Chavan also warned that he would go on hunger strike if the TMC fails to act against the alleged violations within the stipulated period.
