According to a latest development, a unit of Adani group, Adani Transmission announced that it has bagged a contract to install and maintain 10.8 lakh smart meters for Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) consumers.

These smart meters will be installed between Colaba-Cuffe Parade and Sion-Mahim areas at the value at INR 1,300 crores.

In the first phase, the company is likely to install smart meters for seven lakh consumers by the end of 2023.

In an official statement, the company stated that as part of the mandate, smart meters and related communication and cloud infrastructure will be installed over a period of 30 months and maintained for the following 90 months.

As per sources, Adani Transmission is expected to start work shortly on installing the meters.

In addition, Adani Electricity, another unit of the group, indicated earlier that it would invest in smart meters for its consumers in Mumbai at an investment of INR 500 crore.

Features of Smart Meters:

It will ensure that people can keep track of power consumption hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly, and also request for ‘Time of Day’ (ToD) tariffs in near future.

Besides, they can give real-time alerts about non-peak hours when supply of power is at lower tariffs.

This ToD tariff will help users decide on optimising power usage.

The meters will enable BEST customers to monitor online their power consumption, Adani Transmission said. The meters will also provide an option for pre-paid billing and net-metering for housing societies and commercial buildings with roof-top solar facilities.

BEST will also have the ability to carry out remote connection and disconnection of non-paying customers. Smart meters also enable regulators to design consumer-friendly Time of Day Tariffs and drive overall efficiency in electricity distribution.
